This section describes how to set up and load an HL7 schema for an input file. To set up and load an HL7 schema for an output file, see Setting up an HL7 schema for an output file.

Defining the general properties

In this step, the schema metadata such as the Name, Purpose and Description are set.

  1. In the Repository tree view, expand the Metadata node.

  2. Right-click HL7, and select Create HL7 from the pop-up menu.

  3. Enter the generic schema information such as its name and description.

  4. Click Next to set the type of schema.

Setting the type of schema (input)

In this step, the type of schema is set as either input or output. For this procedure, the schema of interest is input.

  1. In the dialog box, select HL7Input as the type of schema.

  2. Click Next to define the input file.

Uploading the input file

This step involves selecting the input file. You can also preview the structure of the HL7 file selected.

  1. In the File path field, browse to or enter the path to the HL7 file to be uploaded.

A preview of the HL7 file structure is displayed in the Message View area.

  2. Click Next to open the schema mapping window.

Mapping the schema

The schema mapping window opens:

  1. In the Schema View area, select the type of segment from the Segment (As Schema) drop-down list.

  2. In the Message View area, select the elements or attributes of each message segment that you want in the schema.

    Note

The HL7 structure is comparable to that of XML. The elements and attributes selected from the Message View must correspond to the type of segment selected.

  3. Drop the columns selected onto the Schema View table.

  4. Click the corresponding User Column field if you want to change the name and enter the new name manually.

  5. Click Next to finalize the schema.

Finalizing the schema

This step shows the final schema generated. The name corresponds to the type of segment selected.

  1. If needed, change the name of the metadata in the Name field (by default this is populated by the name of the segment type), add a comment in the corresponding field and make further modifications using the toolbar, for example:

    • Add or delete a column using the and buttons.

    • Change the order of the columns using the and buttons.

  2. Click Finish to finalize creation of the HL7 input file.

The new metadata item is added to the Repository tree beneath the HL7 node.
