Semantic type

  • In Talend Cloud: The semantic type of a column or record corresponds to the type of data that can be found in it, such as names, ZIP codes, phone numbers, and coordinates. The Talend Cloud applications all benefit from semantic awareness, meaning that when you look at your sample data, it will be automatically categorized using the default semantic types, or the ones that you have created yourself.
  • In Talend Data Catalog: A semantic type defines the structure or the possible values of elements.

During the data profiling and metadata harvesting process, Talend Data Catalog compares the data values with the semantic types available in its dictionary. When there is a match, the semantic type is proposed automatically.

For example, the data dictionary type of “user@company.com” is String. But its semantic type is Email as its pattern is indicative of an email.
